Malachi Bogdanov is an award winning Director, Writer and
Producer. He has directed over seventy professional productions and has recently
directed his first feature film The Mandrake Root for European Drama Network for which he also wrote
the screenplay. The Mandrake Root was was nominated for a Royal Television
Society Award for best drama.
After training at the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville in
the USA
and renowned physical theatre school Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris Malachi
formed his own company Torsion Theatre. In 1997 Malachi became an Associate
Director of the English Shakespeare Company where he directed International
tours including A Midsummer Nights Dream,
The Three penny Opera, Romeo and Juliet and an award winning
production of Richard the Third (UK and
Australian Tour – Herald Angel for best production at the Edinburgh Festival).
In 1999 he directed Hamlet, Titus Andronicus and an International
tour of Romeo and Juliet for the
company before moving on to work as a freelance artist – Malachi now directs
shows all over the world most recently in Sweden and America.
In 2003 he wrote and directed Bill Shakespeare’s Italian Job in the UK
before playing to great acclaim at the Neuss International Theatre Festival in Germany in
2004. This production became the subject of a BBC 4 Documentary and was
broadcast on BBC2 as part of the ‘Theatre Biz’ series. Over the past two years
Malachi’s shows have established themselves as a central part of the Neuss programme with his
productions of Macbeth Kill Shakespeare
and a new adaptation of Marlowe’s Edward
the Second for The Wales Theatre Company.
In Italy Malachi has recently directed a new version of Alice in Wonderland for La Botte e Il Cilindro as well as directing A Midsummer Nights Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Taming of the Shrew and The
Merchant of Venice for Teatro Mab. Malachi also directed the Italian
version of Macbeth Kill Bill Shakespeare.
Recently in the UK Malachi has directed Pinocchio and Pandora’s Box ( Birmingham MAC and Edinburgh Festival) and The Borrowers (Birmingham MAC). He was also commissioned to write and direct a new version of The Odyssey called 'From Ithaca with Love’, a production to celebrate the opening of the prestigious new Millennium
Point Building
in Birmingham .
In 2007 Malachi directed his first feature film The Mandrake Root for which he also
wrote the screenplay. The Mandrake Root
was entirely shot in Sassari , Italy for the
British production company European Drama Network in collaboration with Italian
production company Bencast. Malachi’s highly acclaimed ‘Macbeth Kill Bill
Shakespeare’ will be back in 2016 (it’s sixth revival). Murray Lachlan Young's Modern Cautionary Tales
For Children directed by Malachi also had its second outing at Soho Theatre.
Malachi’s most recent shows include The Lover by H. Pinter and L’America by Marco Andreoli for Teatro
D’inverno in Italy, Stones In His Pockets
in Sweden for Gothenburg English Speaking Theatre, a production of The Shaughraun in America for the
University of Southern Florida as part
of the Brit Programme, Steve Backshall's 'Wild and Live' tour and The
Thinking Drinkers Guide to Alcohol that is currently in the West End for its sixth successive year. He has just finished the feature film of Macbeth - Kill Bill Shakespeare for Capriola Films in Association with Birmingham City University. Due for release in January 2017.
In 2006 Malachi was made an Honorary Professor of the University of Northumbria ,
Newcastle .
Malachi has lived in Italy for the past 15 years and is now based in Bath in the United Kingdom. His passion for everything artistic has led him to create (now Artistic Director and Curator) of Bath Contemporary Artists Fair (BCAF). Malachi won the 'Bath Life Award' in 2022 for his artistic endeavours.
